WIC to allow buying fruits and vegetables

This is cool. Starting today, mothers getting WIC can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, canned beans, baby food, and tortillas.

They don't get any more money, but they are now allowed to spend a portion of what they get on the new items. The money to pay for it is taken from the milk allotment. The amounts are $6 per kids, $8 for pregnant women,  and mothers of kids 5 and under, and $10 for mothers who are exclusively breastfeeding, for an average of $14 a month per family. Hey, that's up from zero. For kids who've never seen broccoli, it's a big deal.

The previous rules were put in place at a time when hunger and anemia were more of a problem than obesity.
